Just ten minutes northeast of downtown Los Angeles, the astonishingly vast Ernest E. Debs Regional Park Debs is a gem in the park system. The majority of its nearly 300 acres remain in a natural state. Trails weave throughout, and improved picnic areas are favorite sites for those holding family outings and community events. Native and migratory birds abound in some of the last natural arroyo woodlands in Southern California. The park contains significant stands of California black walnut (Juglans californica), a native tree designated "very threatened" by the State Department of Fish and Game. Debs Park is also home to the multi-million dollar Audubon Nature and Science Center. The elegant and innovative facility was built using the latest "green" building methods, and serves as a model for environmentally sustainable development. The Center provides environmental educational programs for the 50,000 schoolchildren who live within two miles of the park. The Debs Park facility is part of the Audubon Society's focus on establishing centers in urban communities.
