The LA River West Bank Trail is the longest continuous section: 14.4 miles from Atwater Village through Griffith Park up to Burbank. Marsh Park, Steelhead Park, Egret Park, Oso Park and the Great Heron Gates at Rattlesnake Park are all access points in the Frogtown / Glendale Narrows section. Ballona Creek’s 13.5-mile bike path is the other major option, running from Culver City to Playa del Rey.

Yes — Griffith Park’s 4,300 acres are open daily from sunrise to sunset, with no fire-season closures in normal years. The classic loop combining East Observatory Trail, Berlin Forest and Mount Hollywood (4.7 mi, 1,130 ft gain) is the signature hike. Bring water — almost no shade on the upper sections.

Descanso Gardens is a non-profit botanic garden in La Cañada Flintridge with a paid admission ($15 adults, free for members) and curated planted landscapes — closer to a botanical museum than a hiking trail. The Inner Loop walk (1.3 mi) is included with admission.

Starting in the early 2000s, the Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority has acquired and restored a chain of small parcels along the soft-bottom Glendale Narrows section of the Los Angeles River — Egret Park, Oso Park, Steelhead Park, Marsh Park, Elysian Valley Gateway, and the Great Heron Gates among them. Each is small on its own, but together they form a continuous public-access ribbon along the river and reconnect long-isolated neighborhoods to the watershed.

El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Monument (LA’s founding site, 1781), Los Encinos State Historic Park (the 1849 de la Osa adobe), the Adamson House at Malibu Lagoon, the Will Rogers Ranch House (under reconstruction), and the Mentryville oil-town ghost site are the standouts. All are free or low-cost to visit.
