Cherry Canyon Park

Directions & Trail Map

Cherry Canyon, approximately 131 acres in size, is located in the hills behind Descanso Gardens, south of the 210 Freeway in the City of La Cañada Flintridge. This beautiful canyon was preserved, through several acquisitions, beginning in 1986. The purchase of the property was possible primarily through both the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the City of La Cañada Flintridge.

Cherry Canyon is part of the north face of the San Rafael Hills and is an excellent example of natural chaparral habitat. The San Rafael Hills are recognized as an area of regional significance and concern as an “important ecological area for chaparral habitat.” The Canyon supports a wide range of birds and mammals from great horned owls to deer.

An important segment of the La Cañada Flintridge Loop Trail system passes through the Cherry Canyon area beginning with Flint Canyon Trail at Hampstead Road and continuing up through the canyon, turning northward onto the Descanso fire road.

Cherry Canyon, itself, is a natural watercourse forested with live oaks, sycamores and other native plants. The stream flows throughout the year, fed by permanent springs near the top of the canyon. There is no other area in the City offering such a combination of beauty, tranquility, water, bird life, native plants, trees and easy access. It is a precious and unique resource.

The trails are very scenic. They include: the Owl Trail, Liz’s Loop Trail, Cerro Negro Trail, Flint Canyon Trail, and the Ultimate Destination Trail. Various rest stops offer wonderful views of La Cañada Flintridge, Descanso Gardens, La Crescenta, Pasadena, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Verdugos, and on a clear day, the skyline of downtown Los Angeles.
